Longbarn was the first district to be built under the Warrington New Town umbrella in 1972. It has around 900 houses in an area between Birchwood Way (A574) and the main railway line to Manchester and Liverpool, close to Padgate Station.
The district is named after Long Barn Farm which was located on the east of the district. Longbarn Bridge on Long Barn Lane crossed the Cheshire Lines Railway close to the farm with Long Barn Cottage further along the lane, as seen on the OS 1:25,000 (outline) map 1945-65.
Harpers Road is named after Harper’s Farm which was on the west side of the district.

The primary school, Longbarn Primary, on Fallowfield Grove, was closed in 2010 (Warrington Guardian report). One of the reasons suggested in 2004 for its closure was lack of numbers for that particular year. The school opened in 1974 to accommodate 175 pupils.
In February 2011, Warrington Borough Council announced that the school was to re-open as a referral unit for pupils who have been excluded from mainstream schools. Called New Horizons School, it is a specialized service supporting young people, aged 5-16, with additional social, emotional and mental health needs who require preventative/direct intervention.
They support and educate young people who have been or are at risk of being excluded from their mainstream setting and/or who are socially excluded for reasons of illness or vulnerability. Read more on the Longbarn Residents Association website.
