Kingswood is a new district built close to Junction 8 of the M62 motorway on land that used to be occupied by Burtonwood Air Base. It is bordered by Burtonwood Road, Charon Way (leading to Gemini Retail Park), Westbrook Crescent and Westbrook Way. My photos were taken in 2012 when just a part of the district had been built.
In earlier times the area was woodland and was part of the Royal hunting forest of King Henry I, hence the name of the district. In the centre of the district is a large circular green with a surrounding dry ditch, which gives the impression of a castle site, although this is just for decoration. The road names include Kingswood Road, Archers Green Road, Butts Green, Castle Green, Coppice Green, Dovecote Green, Falconers Green and Heralds Green.

The entrance to the district from Westbrook is a welcoming sight with castle-effect walls featuring the district name on each side in the brickwork. I can just imagine the king returning from his travels riding his horse along Kingswood Road to the village green and castle, with a crowd of villagers cheering his arrival. In fact, there is a stone mosaic of the king doing just that outside the main village green.
The Kingswood Centre stands next to Butts Green and was being used as the polling station for the 3 May 2012 local elections the day I visited to photograph the area. I was quite impressed with the layout of the area when I stopped off to walk around. I’ll have to save my pennies though if I wish to live here – a three-bedroom house on Archers Green Road was on sale for an asking price of £194,500.

Enjoy this manual slide show of the district.
